When going through the 5 Stages of Change, remember these, Pre-contemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action and Maintenance? A great way to help you get started is to write down your S.M.A.R.T. Goal. What are S.M.A.R.T. Goals? Check this out:

  • Specific – target a specific area for improvement.

  • Measurable – quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress.

  • Attainable – specify how it can be done.

  • Relevant – motivation for doing it.

  • Timely – specify when the result(s) can be achieved.

Let’s start at the top. What are you looking to achieve? Weight loss, muscle building, improving your stamina? Determine what you’re looking to approve and write it down. Next you must decide how you’re going to measure your success. Something like going to the gym three days a week. In order to attain the goal, set smaller goals to avoid getting discouraged. For example, if your goal is one pullup you’ll want to work on strengthening the proper muscles to attain a pullup. And then determine why this is relevant to you. If it doesn’t matter to you, you won’t do it. Something like participating in a Spartan race which will require upper body strength will be a great motivator to get that first pullup. Lastly, be honest with yourself about how long it will take to achieve your goal. Will it be three or six months, whichever it is, be open to adjusting your expectations based on the commitment you’re able to apply and just life in general. Whatever your goal is, applying the S.M.A.R.T. Goals will help you crush that goal!
