CrossFit Etiquette...Who Knew!?

Do you know there is CrossFit box etiquette? It may be the last thing on your mind when you’re working up that sweat but there are some things to keep in mind as a courtesy and help each other succeed.

Check Into Class: Because CrossFit Allure is a smaller gym we only have so much space and can accommodate 10 athletes per class. If you have a favorite class, be sure to check in early. If you’ve checked into a class but cannot make it for some reason, simply uncheck from the class to allow space for others.

Be on Time: We don’t want you to miss a thing! Please try to be on time as it can be disruptive to our small class setting. That said, we’d rather have you there a few minutes late than not at all. Little things can happen on the way to the gym so iIf you’re going to be late then a courtesy text to your coach is appreciated.

Check Your Ego at the Door: Some days you’ll have good WOD scores and some days not-so-good WOD scores. Don’t be disappointed, not every day is a PR day. Your coach may tell you to take some weight off your bar. Your coach may have you modify a movement. This is because the coaches have your best interest in mind. They’re helping you be better today than yesterday, and setting you up for future success as well.

Introduce Yourself to Newcomers: You remember being the newbie right? The CrossFit gym can be intimidating on your first day and a welcoming hello and smile will make all the difference in the world.

Don’t Break Down Your Equipment Until Everyone has Finished the WOD: Let everyone finish their WOD prior to putting your equipment away. Walking your equipment past others who are still working out is disruptive and can be dangerous. Instead, take this time to put your time on the whiteboard, get some water and CHEER ON your fellow athletes. Taking interest and encouraging others helps to build a great CrossFit community. Of course, there may be times when you must leave right away. During those times please coordinate with others, or your coach, to put the equipment away for you after everyone is done.

Put It Away Where You Found It: Because we have a smaller CrossFit Box it is important that you put the equipment away in its place. Everything is placed to save as much space as possible.

Clean the Equipment When You Are Done: Please be courteous to athletes who may need the equipment after you and wipe down the equipment with sanitizing wipes. This ensures we keep dust, dirt and germs to a minimum. Note: this mainly applies to metal surfaces such as barbells, pullup bars, kettlebells, etc.; however, rower handles and display buttons should also be wiped down. Please do not wipe the rower and bike displays themselves as this can cause them to malfunction. Also, please be careful in wiping wooden objects (e.g. rings) as this may cause them to splinter.

Control Your Equipment: When dropping a barbell to the ground, please follow the bar down to ensure it doesn’t bounce out of control. Barbells can bounce and are dangerous if not controlled. The same is true for other equipment. Please don’t toss Kettlebells or throw your jump rope across the room in celebration (or disgust). Be aware of your surroundings and others.

Never Drop An Empty Barbell: Unless there are bumper plates on the bar (rubber weights) then barbells must be set on the ground gently after use. If you are exhausted after finishing that last thruster, you still need to control the bar all the way down. This helps to extend the longevity of the bar. Even dropping a bar from a few inches above the ground can break it (e.g., when taking plates off your bar) so please hold the bar until it’s placed gently on the ground.

Remembering and employing these etiquette rules will help maintain safety and enjoyment for all at the gym, and helps extend equipment life.

We’d like to know though, were you surprised by any of the rules? Are there any we missed?

If you have any questions about our list above be sure to chat with Coach Jeff or Coach Brooke.
